Source: CourtListener<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was further reiterated that Zhao should be granted permission to leave the U.S. and return to the UAE until his sentencing in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers firmly stated that he has no intention of staying in UAE to evade his sentencing date despite the potential 18-month prison term.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs Judge Tsuchida found, all the facts and circumstances amply demonstrate that Mr. Zhao poses no risk of flight and should be permitted to reside at home with his family in the UAE pending sentencing. The government\u2019s motion should be denied.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Furthermore, Zhao\u2019s lawyers argued that he had taken responsibility for his actions by flying from the UAE to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis intent is to resolve this case and it would be illogical to take all of these material steps without the intent to appear for sentencing,\u201d the filing noted.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 22, U.S. prosecutors submitted a court filing, arguing that Zhao should be restricted from leaving the United States due to the perceived flight risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ asserts that if Zhao chooses not to return from the UAE for sentencing, securing his return would pose challenges for the government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><strong>Crypto Biz: Binance\u2019s CZ falls, Grayscale and BlackRock meet with SEC, and more<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, as per a bond document filed to the court on Nov. 21, it was disclosed that Zhao had a $175 million release bond and committed to returning to the U.S. 14 days before his sentencing date on Feb. 23, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after Zhao agreed to step down as CEO of Binance amid pleading guilty to several charges levied by the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p>While the deal allows him to maintain his majority stake in Binance, he will not be allowed to hold an executive position at the crypto exchange. <\/p>\n<p>The deal does not affect the pending litigation that Binance has against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission; however, it will resolve the company\u2019s issues with the Commodities Futures Trading Commission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magazine: <\/strong><strong>HTX hacked again for $30M, 100K Koreans test CBDC, Binance 2.0: Asia Express<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/changpeng-cz-zhao-us-government\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Binance CEO Changpeng \u201cCZ\u201d Zhao has opposed the United States government\u2019s efforts to block his return to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to be with his family while awaiting sentencing following his guilty plea.
